Perhaps I’ve mentioned that I’m a matching fanatic…but this goes a little beyond even my usual… J
Last summer I saw a very cute dress in the window at Express (y---e---s… I do occasionally shop there…) but I resisted it for a few weeks. Eventually the white with black plaid wavy lines strapless pencil dress wore me down and I bought it. While in the store, I saw the dress in a solid purple and a solid Kelly green. I resisted them even longer… A few days after I saw the colors I was in Karen Millen in the Short Hills Mall in NJ (a lovely shop from the UK that has stores all over the world but mostly in Europe. They have begun to open in the US, starting in Atlanta, then Boston, then NJ, and finally Soho) and saw very pretty black fabric heels with Kelly green polka dots!!!!! And they were on sale!!! They fit perfectly, look fabulous and I bought them! I ran across the aisle to the Express to find my green dress. Naturally they didn’t have my size. I showed her my shoes the salesperson totally understood, was very kind-she called a few of the Manhattan stores for me, found the dress, and I ran into the City to buy it. So exciting!! The story does not end here though…
A few weeks later, a friend and I were in Barneys and as were leaving a black hat caught my eye…I wear hats to Temple (shul, in Yiddish, and what I call it) and buy new and vintage ones as I find them, all year long. Since my glam best friend is helping reach my flapper potential I might start wearing them more often but we’ll see…So, back to the black hat. As we got closer to it I saw that it had Kelly green stripes!!! I'll put picutres up over the weekend, maybe Monday.
I bought all the pieces last summer and thought about wearing the outfit on Rosh Hashanah, but last year it was much later, at the end of September, the outift felt a bit too summery. I went online and checked that in 2010 Rosh Hashanah was early in Sept, so I saved my outfit. I’ve worn it to work a few times and love it, but this will be the first time I will wear the hat. It is packed along with my black jewelry and lingerie waiting in the car for me to drive to my cousin’s this afternoon. And wear tomorrow.
My outfit for Friday has a whole different feeling…Months ago while looking at the Couture shows for what was Spring 2010 I discovered it. John Galliano did an equestrian collection for Christian Dior that was positively GORGEOUS. I fell in love with many pieces and will either take out of my closet or buy pieces with the silhouettes he had shown, however, it was the riding hat with the veil that captured my soul. I can buy Dior ready to wear at Bergdorf’s or at the Dior stores in NY or Paris…but Couture? Much as I yearn for it it is just not a part of my life. Qu’elle dommage…truly. A few weeks after the show I was at a flea market, a vintage show and I saw a riding hat-a real one. Beaver and made for a lady in 1869, with her initials embroidered into the band!!! The next weekend I headed straight for the fabric district on 38th St in Manhattan and had a wonderful bonding experience buying lace netting to create the veil like Galliano showed. Weeks after that I was in Neiman Marcus going through the sale rack and found a most glorious Yves Saint Laurent jacket that will go perfectly with a pencil skirt and boots for my “riding” outfit. (Because what a horse needs is a French couturier!!). I’m incredibly happy that it won’t be so hot for the holiday but I think it’s still too warm for boots, so I have black heels and they will have to do. Now if I only had a riding crop…
