Last week I had the incredible privilege of going to Lincoln Center as part of Fashion Week to see a panel discussion hosted by Hamish Bowles (European Editor at Large, Vogue) along with Alexander Wang, Tory Burch, and Jenna Lyons (creative Director and co-founder) of J Crew. It was a fun opportunity to see fashion people at all levels from Michael Kors and Andre Leon Talley to beautifully dressed people I didn't know at all. The discussion was a bit dumb. Why does every interviewer ask a designer "where do you get your inspiration from"? But the group only had about 20 minutes so it's an easy way to get them talking, I guess.
The highlight of the evening was "The Show" the largest fashion show ever staged in NY. My glam best friend and I watched it on a huge screen inside Alice Tully Hall and it was gorgeous! To see how the clothes move, to see the models live-well, it was AMAZING! Aside from the 197 ensembles what was unusual was that on Sept 7 just before fashion week for Spring 2011 this extravaganza showed Fall 2010!! I could go buy anything shown the very next day! No waiting 6 months for the product to be made, shipped, finally put on the selling floor.
A week or so after that wonderful experience I had the great privilege of being invited to the equally wonderful experience of the Anna Sui show at Lincoln Center. My new friend and benefactor and I were able to see Suzy Menkes (senior fashion writer at International Herald Tribune) and Sally Singer of Vogue, of course we saw Anna Sui. We went in early and saw last dress rehearsals so were able to recognize Chanel Iman and Lily Cole. Very exciting! We got beautiful little Anna Sui notebooks-silver cover with a dramatic peacock embossed onto it and every inside page a different floral border.
After the show let out, we saw Bill Cunningham taking photos and one of the most perfect moments of the privilege of going to fashion week shows-leaving the venue with the people who cannot get in staring after us...I agonized a little over what to wear because I'm not really an Anna Sui customer, one likes to wear the designer's clothes when one goes to her show. I wore Chanel when I went to that show...I didn't have any Anna Sui to wear so decided to just be as trendy as possible to wore my newest suit-terribly military. An olive fitted jacket with lots of flaps and buttons, belted with a little peplum. I added an olive Ralph Lauren belt that I had for years and never wore. I wore it with my new Nanette Lepore olive pencil skirt which is draped with swags. I have olive and tan two-tone Paul Smith Mary Janes but they are just too uncomfortable-I was going to wear them anyway until I realized I don't have a bag that goes with this ensemble. I wore brown suede pumps that come up very high on the back of my heel and my brown patent leather YSL bag. It all worked-I felt absolutely perfect. Chic but forward-perfect to be stared at by the little people. (And tonight begins Yom Kippur so I will atone for my arrogance). But what a joy!!
