Day 2 of our Boston weekend got off to a late start because our room was so fabulous we didn't want to leave it. But, we eventually arrived at the museum. The Richard Avedon exhibit was so very wonderful to see-fashion photographs from 1944-2000, some of which I had seen before, some of which are actually famous and some of which I didn't know at all. We didn't love the way it was curated, though, there were rooms and sections that held specific decades but they weren't consecutive-it was odd. And there were a good 8 or 10 photos that were duplicated in different sections, we would have preferred to see more pictures!!
Next it was time for Arnold Scaasi. My husband and I are very spoiled and are used to the Met, the Louvre, the Victoria and Albert-all of these are huge museums and put on large exhibits. The Scaasi exhibit was one room, about 20 mannequins. I'm not really complaining my criteria is always "I just want to see the clothes". There were some exquisite pieces, ensembles really, a dress with a coat in a fabric that works with it but with the dress fabric used as the lining of the coat. It's a very couture, very Chanel idea to present and I love it!! The rest of the exhibit was a wonderful experience, just to see the work of a designer I don't know very much about, but his work really isn't my taste, especially his later work of the 70's. He designed for President's wives, celebrities, and socialites but the exhibition was so much about the celebrity than the clothes and I care more about the clothes.
We went to one of the three cafes for a snack and saw a Japanese woman in a beautiful kimono. It was a complicated series of opposites...one side of it was cream with a grey pattern and then other sides were solid grey but some portions were grey with the cream pattern-it was all rather sporadic and beautiful. The obi was brown, cream, grey stripes but each stripe a different width-it was fun to see. We also saw a lot of kids around the museum drawing what they were looking at, as many times as I've gone to museums on NY I have never seen so many drawing children.
We, of course bought things at the museum shop. They were heavy so we wanted to drop them in the room not carry them all day, so lunch was at Marliave again. This time my cocktail was a Henry Marliave: grey goose vodka, lillet blanc, chambord which was so tart I puckered. I did not like that at all. My husband had the same Dog fishhead IPA and loved it again. He had an omelet with bacon which looked perfectly cooked, I had a steak and cheese sandwich onto whic they hid ultra thin and ultra light onion rings!!! It was all so delicious!! Best music ever! All flapper jazz-really vintage music.
Dinner was at O-Ya. It remains my absolute FAVORITE restaurant in Boston. By far. But, I don't think you want to hear about it again. We're scheming on how how to get to O-Ya just for the day very soon!!
