I had a glorious evening, Wednesday night with my favorite glam friend last night. Being glam and being glam together is our favorite state of being and for the next few weeks we both need to be economical which is definitely not our favorite state of being. So how to be glam on a budget? Hotel bars and lots of discipline.
We met at the Apple Store in the meat packing district then wandered along 14th St window shopping and going in and out of stores. We went into Matthew Williamson which is really not my style-great silhouettes but way to colorful (I wore a shocking turquoise dress yesterday but I would NEVER pair it with fuscia anything, thank you Matthew). We walked past new restaurants storing up the names for future use. We wandered into Alexander McQueen and it took our collective breaths away. I want to say I felt as if I had died and gone to heaven but my vision of heaven includes 2 things that weren't there last night: the ability to fit into the size 2's on the fixtures and the ability buy whatever I wish. Maybe I should say I walked into McQueen and Jeffrey and felt as if I had died and gone to hell???? J
The pieces were from McQueen's fall 09 collection which I remember loving during Fashion Week. Black and white oversized check suits-full A-line skirt with a fitted jacket whose lapel or sleeve or collar had EXPLODED into an oversized ruffle. Well balanced, in proportion and spectacular! Clever evening gowns...a long black sequined hoodie, erupting into a train and lined in red sequins hung just perfectly. Glamorous and comfortable-who would have they could coexist quite so easily? Another was a long column made of piano shawl, one shoulder. Emerging out of the shoulder seam of the one shoulder was a long narrow scarf to be draped beautifully or let hang down the back but in reality was a sleeve for the other shoulder!!! It draped across your naked back and down your arm but you slid your hand through the opening at the bottom and buttoned the 4 tiny buttons at your wrist. The word drape was invented for silk crepe and the gown was exquisite.
We went into Jeffrey which always a dreamy experience though all I could think of was, “why is it that everything I love is $2900-my own special kind of hell. We had fun chatting about the pieces with the sales people.
We then looked towards the Highline as neither of us had been up there yet. We thought to go during the summer but the day we planned on was a Nor'easter so...never mind. Last night was the perfect night to go. Crisp and clear but deliciously cold. We wandered along the flower beds and teak deck chaises having 20's banter and words of adoration (the views and each other) marveling at how shockingly beautiful NJ was. Yes you read correctly! But it was dark and we looked out over the water at skyscrapers and lights which sparkled on the river-trust me it was gorgeous!!!
Unfortunately, my (very) high heel Christian Loubutin booties were not made for the terrain of the MDP nor for the length of the terrain so we left the views and walked into the bar of the Standard Hotel. How could we not go to the hottest place in town? It was packed with fabulously dressed people and a few suburbanites who know of the district and want to be a part of it all. We stood around looking fabulous for about 10 minutes and were about to give up on finding seats when I noticed 2 women at the perfect corner table paying. So we waited aggressively and got it! We each ordered a drink, I a negroni and he a martini and one appetizer, I, cauliflower soup garnished with slivered almonds, chives, a fried egg and trout roe and he a platter of Gorgeous oysters. All was elegant and delicious and relatively budgety! But now I would really like to go back for dinner. I simply must figure out just how they got the egg to be a squared off cloud of silk.
